the body is scored too
Extrapool Nijmegen Netherlands
December 2018
the body is scored too is an ongoing exploration of drawing with and from what the body remembers of previous drawing processes and actions – working with and transforming the traces and patterns that are the body moving, breathing, feeling.
Proposing that a moving body is in a continual process of generating and erasing itself.
In a 4 -day residency at Extrapool Nijmegen December 2018, I was invited to make a drawing on the walls of a small open space off the side of the main podium space. I was interested in exploring gestural articulations and devices – conversations between right and left, between vertical axis and joints, between the day’s mood and mechanical curiosity.
Scale and architecture were part of these 3 days, in that I was both drawing large-scale on the walls responding to corner, gap, angle, surface and drawing small-scale figurative representations of myself from embodied memories of the positions I had previously found myself passing through whilst drawing on the walls. The scale and positioning of my body in relation to wall and page became a fascinating dialogue between the processual activity of moving-drawing and the figurative representation of body in a very small notebook.
