Openbook, a residency and collaboration with Alexis Blake at L’Animal à L’Esquena Catalonia
2007
Residency at L’Animal a L’Esquena, Celrá, Catalunya where I worked with visual artist Alexis Blake exploring the making of a book. The book as an object with pages choreographically configured to reflect and invite movement. The outcome was a book whose pages were suspended, folded, rolled out, cut and projected and that were presented and proposed an architectural space for movement, a book into which audience could step into, jump over and navigate around. Pages had different formats, scales, materials. Nothing written on the pages. The pages were the book and shared as communal event.

During the residency I also worked with the children at the municipal dance school L’EMDC in Celrà. Children take classes and work with improvisation from an early age and their ability as dancers with an inventiveness and fluidity of imagination in improvisation was remarkable. We worked with moving and drawing using different materials and objects including paper, tape, small things and light. I am particularly interested in developing ways of working-with children, adults, non-dancers, students, amateurs, professionals so that learning comes through doing and experiencing things together.
